When George Clarke met A1 Flues

Well, A1 Flues certainly made a good impression on TV presenter George Clarke at the recent Construction Enquirer Awards in Birmingham.

The star of Channel 4 shows Amazing Spaces, Restoration Man and The Home Show ended up buying us THREE bottles of champagne because we were the noisiest company on the nosiest table at the awards.

We were in the running for Best Specialist Contractor to Work With (Under £25m) Award and, to be honest, we were thrilled to bits to have made the shortlist – just being there was a great achievement.

As the compere of the awards, George threw down the gauntlet that aside from the 12 categories of the awards, the 13th one was to be the one for the noisiest table. How could we resist such a challenge?

But the best part was the fact that the rest of the room joined in, and even the editor of Construction Enquirer said “they certainly made some noise”.

When you’re the market leaders in the design, manufacture installation and maintenance of commercial and industrial chimney, flue and exhaust systems, who wouldn’t want to make some noise?

OK, so at an event like that, George was always going to work the room, but our director John Hamnett was struck at how much time they spent chatting about the need to encourage more young people into careers in manufacturing, engineering and construction.

John was particularly struck that George asked for his card at the end of the chat. So in true A1 style, we’ll get back in touch with George to see if we can get involved in the charitable activity he’s involved with around getting young people into our industry.

Next time, George, the drinks will be on us!
