A1 wins Manufacturing Excellence award

The directors of A1 have paid tribute to every at the company after scooping a prestigious award that recognises their world-class approach to manufacturing.

We won the Manufacturing Excellence award at the Midlands Family Business Awards 2014 in Nottingham. We also collected another award on the night after receiving a Highly Commended in the race for the crown of Family Business of the Year.

The manufacturing award in particular is a massive boost for us, according to John Hamnett and TJ Duncan-Moir, because it recognises recent developments that have helped cement our position as the UK’s market leader for the design, manufacture and installation of commercial and industrial chimney, flue and exhaust systems.

“A1 Flue Systems has been at the forefront of the introduction of the new European standards in the UK for the design and manufacture of commercial flue and chimney systems,” said John.

“Every one of our team at A1 has put their heart and soul into setting new standards for designing and manufacturing our flue systems. The Manufacturing Excellence award is recognition of their achievements.

“We’re very proud of the fact that we are a family company that employs other local families, and we have a growing reputation worldwide for products that are made in New Ollerton.”

TJ added that the award win will be a springboard for global growth: as we have been on an export drive over the last 12 months, and awards go a long way in helping to establish credentials.

She said: “Winning awards for our manufacturing capabilities is certainly opening doors for us in new markets, and we are being invited to discuss some flagship projects.”

To win the award, A1 had to overcome some tough hurdles, such as being scrutinised by TV presenter Alex Polizzi – who is famous for dispensing tough love to companies in her TV shows for the BBC and Channel 5.

Ms Polizzi was a judge for the Midlands Family Business Awards, organised by Nottingham-based The Wilson Organisation, which champions the endeavours and successes of family-run companies.

Annabel Prow, CEO of The Wilson Organisation, said: “Family businesses are the bedrock of the UK and global economies, generate over £1tn each year in UK revenues and provide more than nine million jobs in the UK. The Midlands is home to almost half a million family businesses, and all entries this year demonstrate the exceptional pedigree of the region’s family businesses, with our finalists representing a huge range of sectors, from ten to over 500 employees, annual turnover ranging from £1m to more than £50m, and businesses in their second up to sixth generation.”
