A1 signs Battersea Power Station chimney deal

A1 Flue Systems has signed a landmark agreement with Skanska, the main contractor for Phase 2 of Battersea Power Station. The deal, initially worth £483,000, is to provide bespoke commercial chimney systems for the redevelopment of one of London’s most iconic buildings.

We will start work on the first phase of activity this month with the installation of a temporary chimney system for the development’s energy centre.

The temporary flue system is part of the Phase 1 boiler plant that will be up and running ahead of the phased opening of Circus West – the first mixed-use neighbourhood at Battersea Power Station – from late 2016 onwards. It is a stopgap measure, as the buildings that will eventually house the route of the permanent system are still under construction.

We have been in discussions with the Battersea Power Station Development Company for more than two years, and we were convinced that we would secure the Battersea Power Station project based on our recent portfolio of projects in the capital – including The Shard, ‘The Cheesegrater’ (The Leadenhall Building) and ‘The Walkie Talkie’ (20 Fenchurch Street).

Our Director John Hamnett said that our 40-year-old family-run company was confident from day one that we would secure the Battersea Power Station project, as we are the only company in the UK capable of delivering such a challenging installation.

“We are delighted to have signed the agreement to provide flue and chimney systems for the redevelopment of the site of the world-famous Battersea Power Station,” said John.

“Battersea Power Station is the latest in a long line of iconic projects for a company that prides itself on being the best of British in both engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

“Securing the project is testament to the brilliance of all 140 people who work at A1, who have made the company a world beater in the design, manufacture and installation of commercial and industrial chimney, flue and exhaust systems.”

As well as installing the temporary system, Phase 1 activity will also include work to specify a permanent flue and chimney system, which will include constructing a 110m chimney system inside the rebuilt south-west chimney.

The total value of the Battersea Power Station project could be as much as £2m.
