The project

The new Macallan distillery and visitor experience is a stunning piece of contemporary architecture. The £140 million project in the North of Scotland was designed by the same firm of architects who created Heathrow’s Terminal 5. The most striking feature is that it is cut into the slope of the countryside to blend seamlessly with its surroundings.

As well as looking extraordinary, this project was unusual in the fact that we worked with three separate contractors at different stages. Also, the flue support structure was supplied and installed by another contractor – which made our installation extremely challenging because we had no access to the internal for fixing!

Our design

For one contractor, we had to connect a system to two 875 mm diameter Cochran Thermax 15,880 kg/hr pressure jet boilers – each rising through 90-degree elbows then running horizontally through 45-degree elbows to a 90-degree booted base tee and drain within the support structure, then rising vertically straight to termination.

For the second contractor, we had to install 204 mm and 304 mm ventilation systems.

And for the third contractor, we connected a 150 mm diameter Wilson P200-4L generator that runs horizontally through 90-degree elbows to a 90-degree base tee and drain, then rising vertically inside an existing support structure through offset to termination. We also connected three 200 mm diameter Potterton Eurocondense units and four 215mm condensing boilers, each rising into a main 300mm diameter flue that runs horizontally through to a 90-degree base tee and drain, then rising vertically inside an existing support structure through offset to termination.

Testimonial

“This was an amazing project to be involved in, not least because it challenged us to develop a one-off, ‘outside-in’ installation programme because the flue support structure was already in place – meaning access was limited because of the physicality of the building. The challenge was compounded by the weight of some of the larger sections, such as the 875 mm diameter flues. But we have an installation that is second to none in Scotland, and the project was completed without a hitch.” Scotland Area Sales Manager, A1 Flue Systems
